04.07.02> China Night
by Mun Li Kong
China Night has been an annual tradition at the University of Oregon for the past 15 years. Sponsored by the Chinese Student Association (CSA) with help from our community, it is a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce the Chinese culture to the community and celebrate our heritage. Besides China Nights, the CSA sponsors many other cultural exchange events, and at the same time, brings unity to the student body.

I had such a great time at China Night. The food was great like every year that I have attended. I attended last year’s performance as well, but this year was a bit more special to me because I was selected to become one of the hosts for the evening. As a host I was able to present all the great performances that night.

We had the lion dance, which is an absolute tradition for the Chinese and Asian cultures. Jump-roping was another performance that night. A group of CSA students turned jump roping into an art with their complex twists and turns. Who would of thought? Everyone loved it! The Wu Shu club also came to perform that night. They showed of their martial skills that date back thousands of years in China. The original founder of the Wu Shu club is an alumnus here at the UO named Daniel Wu. Mr. Wu is now a superstar and can be seen in numerous Chinese Films. The last performance was a duet on the piano of ancient Chinese folk songs by Rose Hwang and Linda Hwang. They did a wonderful job.

Everyone worked very hard for that night because it’s the biggest event of the year for the Chinese Student Association. Like most culture nights a lot planning and preparation is involved. I felt really good about the whole program. Everything went really well, including the games they prepared after the show. People were also able to get into costumes and take Polaroid pictures for fun!
