The Unity Showcase, "It's Not Just a
Black Thing," was held on January 26 to help commemorate the Martin Luther
King, Jr. holiday. This program included a keynote speech by assistant
professor of history Martin Summers, an open microphone, a candlelight
vigil, and the evening ended with a reception for all participants. The
open microphone period allowed participants to express the personal and
community impact of Dr. King. Poetry was read, students performed "slam
poetry," and portions of letters written in the Birmingham (Alabama) Jail
were read to the audience. All of the speakers, performers, and readers
provided inspiration to everyone in attendance. The Unity Showcase was
sponsored by the Office of Student Life, the ASUO Multicultural Center,
and the Black Student Union.
