02.28.02> Black Awareness Night

The Black Student Union (BSU) celebrated Black History month by sponsoring an all-new event called Black Awareness Night on February 28th. In front of a packed Maple Room audience, members of the BSU portrayed famous figures in Black History, including: Mahalia Jackson, Maya Angelou, Frederick Douglas, Ella Fitzgerald, Madame C.J Walker, Robert Johnson, Marcus Garvey, and Diane Nash. Actors used poetry, song, and drama as they tried to give the audience an insight into the lives of each figure. Throughout the show, trendsetter and fashion designer Natasha Holstine, a University of Oregon student and BSU member, modeled black fashions spanning several decades. Holstine wowed the audience with her sense of style and creativity.
