UO Keynote Address: Selamawi Asgedom
“Liberators, Integrators, and Dream Generators”
Willamette 100, 6:30pm-8:30pm
Known as Mawi to many, this charismatic speaker of Eritrean and Ethiopian origin fled to the United States at age seven from his homeland in a time of civil war after surviving three years in a refugee camp. A graduate from Harvard University, Mawi was featured on Oprah Winfrey for his memoir, “Of Beatles to Angels,” which encapsulates his incredible journey. Named by Essence Magazine as on of the, “40 of the Most Inspiring African-Americans” in the spirit of Dr. King, Mawi will uplift and motivate young people and educators of every kind in harnessing our greatest power, “our power to love.”

Join the BRT for snacks and refreshments as we watch and discuss several film shorts utilizing art, writing, and speaking. Get information and express your viewpoints on a wide range of civil liberty issues you may not even know exist.

Unity Celebration and Candlelight Vigil
UO Gerlinger Lounge, 4:30pm-6:30pm
Join us for presentations by student leaders honoring the teachings of Dr. King’s impact. The vigil then begins on the steps of Gerlinger Lounge at 7pm and ends in the EMU Amphitheater. Refreshments will be provided.
